Jo Buckingham's Story
Jo Buckingham, mother of five, lives in the small, picturesque town of Kaitaia. In 2016, her 16-year-old daughter Georgia passed away after being diagnosed with leukaemia. Her passing came as a real shock to the family as Georgia had been in remission and was doing well after a successful bone marrow transplant.
Jo and her family felt well supported by her local, tight-knit community and Child Cancer Foundation while Georgia was sick and after she passed away. When she felt ready, Jo decided to give back. In 2018, she volunteered for Child Cancer Foundation’s annual Street Appeal. She wore Georgia’s brightly coloured Beads of Courage® on the day and was amazed and humbled by donors’ generosity.
Jo plans to volunteer again for the upcoming Street Appeal and her son Trent plans to study Pharmacology at Otago University in 2020 because he is determined to find a cure for cancer.
