Meet a Family Support Coordinator
Meet Pelea Ngatoko. Pelea has worked as a Family Support Coordinator with the Child Cancer Foundation since 2014. She currently provides one-to-one support to 24 families.
Pelea (far right) stands with her fellow Auckland Family Support Co-ordinators Janet Masina, Donna Brabant and Mary Mangan.
“I always wanted to spend my time doing something that helps people and I had worked in jobs before where I was out in the community. What we do at Child Cancer Foundation takes it to another level, my first week in the job was so intense and nothing can prepare you for the pain you see on people’s faces when they have just found out their child has cancer".
Every family is different. One of the families that Pelea supported, the Phillips family from Auckland, had so many challenging things all happen at once. Josie’s youngest brother Brody was in hospital at the same time as her, the family were having trouble with their accommodation and Cliff had to give up work so he could look after the kids.
"As a parent myself I have an increased awareness and appreciation of the cuddles and time you spend with them, just that little bit more.”Pelea Ngatoko
Family Support Coordinators get to know the family and identify the things that will make the most difference to them depending upon their situation. It might be a counselling session for an overwhelmed sibling, food for a family who are scraping by, or petrol for the long drives to the hospital for treatment.
Please donate today so Family Support Coordinators like Pelea can continue to make a difference in the lives of families facing childhood cancer.
