Shortly after my husband retired as Governor-General in 1977, I was asked to attend the inaugural meeting of the Child Cancer Foundation. At the meeting, a committee of parents and health professionals was formed and I was invited to become Patron.

So began the Auckland-based Foundation. Since then it has grown to a very caring organisation throughout New Zealand.

A special sub-group called CanTeen was formed in 1988 to support teenagers with cancer. Since its inception CanTeen has had a clear focus of the needs of teenagers and their siblings. It is an inspiration and challenge for me to be involved with CanTeen, and see how its members care and show support and understanding to one another.

I feel privileged to be part of the Child Cancer Foundation and CanTeen - to meet the parents, appreciate the wonderful support from the community, and to admire the spirit of these children and young people.
