'SHAVE YOUR LID FOR A KID' - FUNRAZOR GOES NATIONWIDE FOR THE CHILD CANCER FOUNDATION
1/11/06
Getting a haircut takes on a whole new meaning as funrazor, the Child Cancer Foundation Fundraising event where New Zealanders shave their hair for charity, goes nationwide for the first time.
With a Guinness World Record firmly in sight and a goal to raise $500,000, Thursday 7 December 2006 will see New Zealanders all over the country lose their locks in support of the Child Cancer Foundation.
Aiming for no less than one thousand freshly-shaven heads to break the record, there is no time like the present to ‘shave your lid for a kid’ and adopt a new, cooler look for the summer months.
Registrations for the event open today at www.funrazor.org.nz. Entrants can immediately sign on, pledge their support and encourage friends, family and colleagues to do the same. Once registered the next step is to gather sponsors and supporters and challenge colleagues, branches, companies, teams and competitors to join funrazor to help children and families affected by childhood cancer.
Eleven different New Zealand towns and cities will set up shaving stations on Thursday 7th December where participants can be shorn.
The first Auckland funrazor will see Aotea square transformed into a mobile hair salon as participants line up on stage, ten at a time, to see if they can be one of the 1000 needed to break the record in under an hour. Each participant will receive a “before” and “after” shot, great entertainment while they’re in the chair and a haircut that truly makes a difference.
The successful head-shave event originated in Christchurch in 2003, growing last year with Wellington’s first inaugural funrazor, a funrazor in Nelson and even one on Scott Base in Antarctica!
Dean (Deano) Harrison who pioneered the first funrazor in 2003, was the first to officially go under the razor, pledging to shave his infamously long hair to raise money to purchase a PlayStation2 for a friend’s teenage son, recently diagnosed with Leukemia.
The mission soon developed into something more ambitious; to give all kids undergoing treatment a dream Christmas present to help ward off the boredom of spending Christmas in hospital. As such, funrazor is held pre-Christmas, in time to capture the spirit of giving for the fun and festive event.
All money raised by funrazor goes directly to fund ongoing Child Cancer Foundation support programmes to help kids and families, particularly over the Christmas period.
Make sure you go online to register for the great cause and challenge friends, family and colleagues to go under the clippers too.

About the Child Cancer Foundation:
The Child Cancer Foundation is a not-for profit charity that provides practical and emotional support to children with cancer, their families, and the health professionals who treat them. They have 23 branches throughout the country and receive no government funding, or funding from other cancer support agencies. They are instrumental in providing support for health professionals and contributing financially to research initiatives but also focus on providing support and information to families upon diagnosis and throughout their journey with cancer. Their support comes in many forms whether it be financial assistance in the form of meals, transportation, accommodation, support groups, education scholarships or access to holiday homes.
