Christchurch Earthquake 22/02/2011

25 Feb 2011

The days that have followed the devastating Christchurch earthquake which struck just before 1pm on Tuesday 22nd February have been extraordinarily difficult ones.

I would like to acknowledge the trauma, loss, distress and bereavement being experienced by the people of Christchurch and Canterbury.  Our thoughts are with those who have been affected, and their family and friends.

We have been very fortunate that the staff and members of the Child Cancer Foundation Canterbury team have come through the disaster safely.

The children we support who are in hospital are also having their needs met by Health Professionals and where necessary a number of families have been transferred to other hospitals.

We are currently working to confirm the wellbeing of all of the Child Cancer families we support in the region as well as our branch committee members. I would like to encourage families, friends and branch members to help us in this process by contacting us through one of the following methods. If you know Child Cancer families are safe please post this on:

The Family Place at 52 Cashel St, is within the cordoned area prohibited to public entry and is closed until further notice. The building located at 20 Cashel St, which was first damaged in the September 4 earthquake is also cordoned off.

Unfortunately the SIBS camp which was due to be held from today through to Sunday has now been postponed. A new date will be communicated at a later date.

I will continue to update you about the wellbeing of the Child Cancer Foundation community over the coming days. My thoughts are with all of those affected by this life shattering event.
